One teen dead, another critically injured following crash

Winter Haven, Florida — A serious car crash left a 17-year-old boy dead and a 15-year-old girl critically injured Monday afternoon.

The crash occurred on Spirit Lake Road south of Oakwood Estates Community around 3:06 p.m.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Polk County Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Upon arrival, responders found the two teenagers trapped inside a white 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck.

According to law enforcement, the 17-year-old driver passed away at the scene. The 15-year-old passenger suffered serious head trauma, a brain bleed, lung damage, facial fractures, and multiple broken bones. She was rushed to a Tampa hospital where she remains in critical condition.

Accident investigators said the truck was traveling south on Spirit Lake Road when it entered a curve and the driver lost control. The driver then exited the roadway and struck an oak tree.

Investigators said the road were wet and speed may have been a factor. Detectives said they are still trying to determine if seatbelts were being worn.
