The U.S. Department of State is warning Americans who are considering traveling to Mexico.

According to the DOS, it is too dangerous in many areas of Mexico at this time and Americans could suffer tremendously if they do.

Mexico is also a hotspot for online dating scams.

Areas of concern are as follows:

Do Not Travel To:

Colima state due to crime and kidnapping.
Guerrero state due to crime.
Michoacan state due to crime and kidnapping.

Travelers should make sure family and friends back home are aware of [their] location and travel plans. If you are traveling with a group and get separated be sure to send the group your GPS location. Always avoid driving alone at night and take toll roads when you can. If you take a taxi, be sure to take a picture of the car showing the taxi ID number. Request that the taxi driver take toll roads if possible.
